Today's dilemma

The dilemma I have today, in preparation for my 210km bike ride is whether I should shave down or not!

Pros:

1. I will look like I am a serious cyclist (least until I fall off by forgetting to unclip)
2. Less wind resistance (I have fairly hairy legs for some reason)
3. Apparently in an accident it is easier to clean a wound (ref 1 above)
4. Mrs W may enjoy it...
5. I may enjoy it and keep them shaved

Cons:

1. If I wear shorts over the next few weeks people may wonder....
2. As the hair grows back my legs might itch a lot
3. It's just not something a real aussie man should do.
4. I may cut myself and bleed to death
5. Mrs W may not enjoy it ....
6. Wind resistance saving is probably not that much

Hmm - will be guided by your comments folks. Oh btw - how far up should one shave? Just to the bottom of the knicks or (blokes) bikini line or....?

Running: 2 x 4k runs this week with Holly the ever happy lab. Nothing much to report except I keep finding myself smiling a lot while running. One small sore spot on shin found yesterday but is gone today - will keep a close on it! Next run Saturday - 6k

If your going to shave why stop at the knicks. Have you thought of waxing... that could be fun ;-)

Definitely shave - would love to hear a guy's take on the experience. But be prepared that you will feel very weird in jeans/long pants.

ha! i think you should only shave if you commit to keeping them shaved. dudes with week old stubble on their legs and ingrowns look terrible!! make sure you exfoliate and moisturise too. and i reckon if you stopped at the knicks it would look very strange... depending on how hairy your legs are of course...

:)

post a picture for us!

I'm voting "NO" Wobbly. I can understand why competative cyclists would shave down before a race. So go hairy mate !

Waxing will avoid the week-old-stubble look. You could also try one of the depilitory creams available from the supermarket. Less painfull than waxing and just as effective. Again - no stubble.

Let us know what you decide. And yes - post a picture for us girls. :-)

I always have problems with the shaving limit on the leg too. Being a very hirsuite gent like yourself, just shaving to the knicks-line can look a little silly when you're wearing anything shorter than knicks (although, it's a good excuse not to wear speedos) - going up to hte bikini line can be a little painful (and rashy) and usually initiates in-ground hairs for myself.

I'd suggest the knicks line myself- you only need to do it once - by the way, it's also REALLY good for when you get a massage. The massage girls will like you, and it feels much better. Not really any more reason to go ahead is there?

(in fact, must do it myself - yet to shave down this summer either!)

Why don't you use clippers to reduce the length of the hair, without removing it to skin level? No itchy regrowth and more defined leg muscles this way :)

Shave baby, shave.

You start sounding like a real cyclist with this dilema, are you already loving it?

Great you are running good, the shin spot certainly was nothing. Let's avoid the over-alarmed mode :P

I think that the key is in point 4 of the Pros and point 5 of the Cons. You're asking the *wrong* people! :-)

As for the spot on the shin, take every opportunity (boring meetings are good for this) to do a bit of deep massage on the spot. Get it early and often and it won't be a problem (but make sure that you don't grimace in pain just as the boss announces the new company direction - he might take it the wrong way... :-))

Sounds like a lot of work for one bike ride to me!

I'd be looking at the cream option too. That will definitely be less painful on the regrowth.

I was a shaver, now if I get the legs done it is wax, much easier. Speedo line is it though, upper body hair is sacrosanct!

Just the bits that slide along the road, or so I'm told. Warn us first if you post a photo.

Con 3 is worth considering.

Have a good ride - 210k can take you a long way from Melbourne ;)

Just make sure you don't end up with a rash!

Great to finally meet the other day ;-)

All the best for the ride - looking forward to the report BTW can you type standing up - I reckon you won't be sitting down for a while ;-)

Might be a bit late with this but a few things to add. I would say shave. The main benefit I find is it is great for massage. Take the advice from the ladies though. Make sure you exfoliate and moisturise. I shave up to the boxer-short line, nobody wants to see the hair-shorts. Don't go too high. Waxing is good, but costly. Epilators are pretty good too, but very painful (although you get used to it). Mrs W. might like the freshly shaved legs, but after 24 hours, I guarantee she won't want to get too close. Then after 3-4 more days, it won't be prickly anymore, just unsightly. And definitely use clippers to trim it right back before shaving, otherwise you'll be there for hours!

Happy epilation, and have a great ride.

I think that the most important thing to do before a workout is not to shave but pee-pee

Once you start shaving you wont be able to stop. Ok in summer but come winter you may appreciate the insulation.

Shaving the legs is such a pain! I would avoid it UNLESS you tend to be accident proned. I can't imagine hair being that much of a drag.

Mobbly, hope the ride went well .... looked for you on the road but didn't see QBE team.

Did you shave ?

I use trimmers set at shortest length, no pain and makes it easy for Simone, my massage queen of pain .....

See you soon
